UUBBUURRUU

ROCK & ROLL

UUBBUURRUU PRESS SHOT II 2020 2400X1600.png

UUBBUURRUU (Montreal) is a rock’n’roll time machine running on an eclectic amalgam of genres ranging from early ‘60s psychedelia all the way to more contemporary stoner metal. Their fuzzed out and dynamic sound could be described as a new strand of classic rock.

Formed in 2014, the band is the biproduct of songwriter/singer/guitarist Joey Napoleon (El Napoleon) and drummer Maxime Hébert (Les Breastfeeders, Ponctuation, The High Dials)'s demo extravaganzas, which were slated to be tracks for a second Final Flash (Indica Records) album. Wanting to change their lineup, the duo turned to producer/guitarist Samuel Gemme (Elephant Stone, Anemone), lead guitarist Sean Cary-Barnard (Melted Faces, Light Bulb Alley, Palmetto) and bassist Vick Trigger (Les Marinellis, Blue Cheese, Jimmy Target & The Triggers), resulting in a new sound featured on the Swamp Ritual EP (2016). The 5 song collection was released on Kapuano Records (CA) and Merlins Nose Records (EU), receiving rave reviews from established music publications with premieres on Noisey, Exclaim! and Les Inrocks to go along with its nomination for “Best Rock EP” at GAMIQ.

UUBBUURRUU went on to promote their critically acclaimed Swamp Ritual EP, leading to dates in North America and Europe, visiting seven countries in the process. Notable performances had them performing at events such as Bars En Trans de Reines, Canadian Music Week, Pop Montreal, M for Montreal, FME, Distorsion Psych Fest, Waking Windows, Echo Fest, Les Nuits Psychédéliques de Québec, RIDM as well as Taverne Tour. Through the years, the band got to share the stage with international artists including: Nik Turner’s Hawkwind, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Besnard Lakes, Elephant Stone, Tim Presley (White Fence), Timmy’s Organism and Dopethrone.

After a hiatus that saw the band embark on an epic studio journey, chasing Napoleon’s precise vision for their next recording, UUBBUURRUU is coming back with a self-titled full length to be released in the Winter of 2020 via Mothland Records. Choosing to drink from a different well, their new direction still employs elements of psychedelia, but renders a new sonic spectrum. Using assertive songwriting with Joey Napoleon locking onto his strong 70’s american and british metal influences, and precise reel printing by producer Samuel Gemme (Chocolat, Corridor, Anemone), the band’s follow up should provide fans of heavy riffs with plenty to chew on. The UUBBUURRUU LP is out digitally via Believe Canada on January 17th and available in record stores in vinyl and CD formats via Propagande Distribution on January 31st.

Tracks like opener “Cosmic Cannibalism” and “I Don’t Mind” are straight-ahead, riff-heavy rockers while “Laying in an Angel’s Corpse” and “Radio Waves” approach shoegaze territory with their droning guitars and motorik grooves. The highlight might be “Dear God”, a swaying alt-country ballad that memorably begins with the line “Got bitches in my head.”
— Noisey
The track appears on UUBBUURRUU’s latest EP Cosmic Cannibalism, which hears the five-piece toying with “liquid-like guitar sounds and blurry vocal experimentation” amidst blasts of powerful riffs and bombastic beats. “Dear God” perfectly embodies that sound, and now the track has been given some visual accompaniment.
— Exclaim!
