39 Lightyears from Heaven (October 24th, 2025 via Mothland) is the debut album from Oklahoma City-based outfit Brainwasher, a sprawling 10-piece sonic essay where offbeat rock meets distorted electronica. Informed by early trip-hop, whether through otherworldly textures or distinctive surges into double-rhythms, augmented by a risquée, new wave-like approach to arrangements, and complete with lightly eerie vocals reminiscent of shoegaze, the duo’s postmodern psychedelic variations showcase infectious melodies beautifully warped through sheer production ingenuity. Though 39 Lightyears from Heaven has been over ten years in the making, (members from The Flaming Lips) Matthew Duckworth Kirksey and Tommy McKenzie’s introductory full-length as Brainwasher feels immediate and contemporary, putting forth intuitive songwriting that brilliantly if anachronistically meshes genres and styles, while tackling thorny themes with heartwrenching sincerity.
