After garnering attention alongside Moodoïd and Melody’s Echo Chamber, Maud Nadal has been flying with her own wings since 2015. It was an immediate revelation and dazzling ascent.
Maud comes from Auvergne, where her family of self-taught musicians led her to discover the alto violin and the guitar. In Paris, she grew up to the Anglo-Saxon sounds of PJ Harvey and Cat Power, which inspired her Myra Lee project. While her first instinct was to write in English, the multi-instrumentalist laster discovered she wasn't indifferent to the work of songwriters like Dominique A, Brigitte Fontaine and many others.
By the time she formed Halo Maud at the end of 2014, she had penned her first French song, "Dans la nuit". Writing without worrying about language, and often combining both, Maud, with help from producer Robin Leduc, developed a sound at once hazy and breezy, hypnotic and reverberant.
Halo Maud found a home with Michel Records, a Montreal label which released her first EP, Du pouvoir(2017), before signing last fall with prestigious London label Heavenly (Saint Etienne, Temples, Baxter Dury, Toy). An active and sought-after artist (Marietta, Lescop, Corridor, Bon Voyage Organisation…), Maud also has a knack for enlisting the best musicians around: drummer Stéphane Bellity (Ricky Hollywood), keyboard player Olivier Marguerit (O), bass player Vincent Mougel, and, in the studio, guitar player Benjamin Glibert (Aquaserge). This Paris-based dream team really went to town recording the album, which was mixed almost entirely by Angy Laperdrix (Barbagallo, Julien Gasc).
Over twelve contemplative and sometimes psych-tinted tracks, Je suis une île reveals itself to be an ambitious and luminous dream-pop album. From the very first notes of sparkling "Wherever", a catchy single about lost love, Halo Maud sets the tone of her repertoire, which places her somewhere between Blonde Redhead and Beach House. Whether in bilingual pop songs ("Du pouvoir/Power", "Chanceuse"with Moodoïd) or dreamy ballads ("Surprise", "Dans la nuit"), Maud hooks the listener with her magnetic voice. "Tu sais comme je suis" [You know what I'm like], she sings with convincing self-assurance.
